Romania will play their opening match of Euro 2024 on Monday at the Allianz Arena in Munich against fellow underdogs Ukraine. Both teams want to get off to a good start in Group E, which also includes Slovakia and Belgium.

After winning six of their 10 games and drawing four, Romania won Group I and guaranteed their place in Euro 2024. Anghel Iordanescu’s team displayed a strong defense and a potent offense in their victories over Switzerland, Israel, Belarus, Kosovo, and Andorra.

But Ukraine, who placed third in Group C behind Italy and England, secured their spot in the play-offs. Ukraine qualified for the tournament after defeating Iceland (2-1) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-1) with the help of Serhiy Rebrov.

Potential Starting Lineups for Ukraine vs. Romania

Romania (4-2-3-1): Nita, Ratiu, Dragusin, Rus, Bancu; M. Marin, R. Marin; Stanciu, Man, Dragus; Mihaila make up the likely Romanian lineup in the “system of play.”

Ukraine (4-3-3): Similarly, the likely Ukrainian lineup in the “system of play” is Trubin; Konoplia, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Zinchenko; Shaparenko, Stepanenko, Sudakov; Tsyganov, Dovbyk, Mudryk.

Two contenders for the role of dark horses in the tournament

Both Romania and Ukraine are keen to start their Euro 2024 campaign with a victory, so their opening game against each other looks to be hotly contested. This match will not only determine how they play in the competition, but it will also give them a hint as to whether they can make it out of Group E.

Ukraine has advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 and is a team full of optimism due to the talent in Serhiy Rebrov’s squad, which includes top goalscorer Artem Dovbyk from La Liga, experienced players Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mykhailo Mudryk, and other youthful players. Ukraine’s squad is well-rounded and capable of going far in the tournament, having only lost two of their last twelve games, including friendlies, and failing to score only twice (against Italy and Germany).

For the first time since Euro 2016, Romania is participating in a significant international tournament. The Tricolorii are ranked 46th in the world by FIFA after winning their qualifying group without losing. They have, however, had difficulty scoring as seen by the goalless draws in their most recent friendlies against Liechtenstein and Bulgaria.
