There were none of the predicted severe storms in Rhineland-Palatinate. The state’s north and west had especially violent thunderstorms that produced a lot of rain. There are no reports of any damage, though.
On the other hand, the storms can reappear in the evening. A “severe thunderstorm situation” was predicted by the German Weather Service (DWD) for Tuesday. This announcement was made on Monday. It would persist till Wednesday night and was coming from the west.
DWD forecasted strong storms.
Along with heavy rains reaching up to 25 liters per square meter, there will be hail and strong wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h during the thunderstorms. It was reported that strong gusts of up to 110 km/h could occur in some areas, along with the possibility of 40 liters of rain falling every square meter. Even tornadoes and hurricane-force gusts in isolated instances have not been ruled out by the DWD.
Following the rain front, no damage was observed.
However, no damage or other events were reported by SWR reporters on the Mosel, Eifel, or Westerwald. It was dry again when the rain front had moved on. There has been no raise in the country’s southern warning level. There was just going to be isolated showers and thunderstorms.
Severe weather threat to the Rhineland-Palatinate has not yet been eliminated
The German Weather Service hasn’t issued an all-clear yet, though. Warm, humid air presently circling Belgium will soon enter Rhineland-Palatinate, where fresh thunderstorms with the potential to be severe weather systems may form.
Experts predict that after midnight, everything will likely settle down. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to resume on Wednesday morning, according to the DWD. Owing to the erratic weather, this might last into Thursday. Accurate forecasting is not yet feasible, though.
RLP’s west and north had made preparations.
People in Rhineland-Palatinate, especially those in the north and west, have made preparations for potential storms. The in-charge fire and disaster control inspector reported that several thousand filled sandbags were prepared for transportation on low-loaders in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district.
Additionally prepared were mobile flood defense equipment. In the case of significant rain in the area, these could be set up. According to a spokeswoman, the professional fire department in Trier is already on alert. In the case of an emergency, the city is also prepared to quickly assemble a crisis team of sorts. The fire chiefs were in communication with the fire brigades in every other district.
