The first group stage match of the 2024 Copa América took place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta between Argentina and Canada. The world champion Albiceleste defeated their opponents 2-0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez. Leo Messi was a constant menace on the pitch the entire time.
Messi, as usual, gave it his all in an attempt to score a goal, but he was unsuccessful; the Canadian defense played a significant role in keeping the Argentine sensation from finding the back of the net. This group included players such as Moïse Bombito, Derek Cornelius, Alistair Johnston, and Alphonso Davies.
Bombito and Leo Messi engaged in a regrettable play during the match in which the Canadian fouled the world champion in an attempt to stop him from scoring. Nobody missed this, and the Albiceleste supporters harshly denounced it both on social media and within the stadium.
The fans went too far, accusing Bombito of racism in response to what transpired during the game. The attacks have gotten so bad that formal remarks have been made about them by Concacaf and the Canadian National Team.
The issue has been brought up by Canadian players.
Since they were vocal about the issue and got backing from the Canadian Soccer Federation and other clubs, Alphonso Davies and Jesse March went public with their sentiments on social media.
On Saturday, players other than Davies and Marsh spoke out against racism. Alistair Johnston, a Canadian defender, wrote in X, “This is Canada.”It is not tragic, but rather our strength in diversity that makes our nation so unique.”
Even Bombito’s MLS team, the Colorado Rapids, publicly backed their player and denounced the insults, writing, “We extend our affection, and we stand by Moïse Bombito. “Discrimination and racism should never find a place in our sport, on social media or within our society,” in response to the sensitive situation.
